Nail Fungus: An Overview

Posted By Edge
Nail Fungus can be a very frustrating and uncomfortable problem to deal with. It makes your nails discolored and extremely unsightly. People with nail fungus often become anxious about the condition because it prevents them from doing things that they would otherwise enjoy. In order to understand what nail fungus is, let us examine its causes and symptoms.

What is nail fungus?
Nail fungus is a condition that causes nails to look unsightly and grow more slowly or stop growing entirely. It's caused by an infection of oils and dead skin cells, called keratin, in the nail. It may also cause the skin around your nails to become infected.

There are two types of nail fungus:

  • Chronic tinea unguium (ringworm of the fingernails) is a fungal infection that has been present for at least three months (and possibly up to 12 months).
  • Acute onychomycosis (also called "tinea unguium"develops suddenly (within one week), but after this time it may become chronic.

What causes it?
Nail fungus is caused by an organism called dermatophyte fungi. They thrive in warm, moist environments such as locker rooms, swimming pools, and other places where bare feet are exposed to moisture for extended periods of time.

If you have fungal spores on your skin, they can enter your nails through cracks or breaks in its surface layer. The fungi start growing under the nail plate where they aren't visible to the naked eye. If left untreated they will continue growing deeper into your nail bed.

It is also caused by a variety of factors, but the most common include:

  • Injury to the nail
  • Poor hygiene
  • Sweaty feet
  • A history of athlete's foot. The risk increases if you have it in other parts of your body. If you've had an athlete's foot before, you're more likely to get it again.
  • A weakened immune system or diabetes can also contribute to nail fungus because they make it harder for your body to fight off infections and fungi. You may be more likely to get this condition if one or both parents have a genetic predisposition for fungal infections such as athlete's foot and ringworm (tinea corporis).

What are the symptoms of nail fungus?
Not all people with a fungal infection have signs or symptoms of nail fungus. However, if you do experience symptoms they will depend on how long you have had an infection and how severe it is. Some common signs include:

  • Thinning of your fingernails or toenails (onycholysis)
  • Changes in color — white spots or patches
  • Thickening of your fingernails or toenails (Painful thickening under your nails and separation from surrounding tissue)

Symptoms can be difficult to pinpoint because they may mimic other common health problems such as dry skin or psoriasis. Moreover, if one hand has symptoms while another doesn't it might be hard to diagnose what's wrong without professional help (a doctor would have more experience in diagnosing this type of condition).

Conclusion

Nail fungus is not considered a serious medical condition. However, if left untreated, it can cause permanent damage to your nails. So it's important to take precautions to avoid getting it. Not only will this make your nails worse, but it can spread the infection to your other nails and to the skin around your nails. It can also make you more prone to catching other fungal infections. If you think you have nail fungus, see a doctor who can diagnose it and prescribe treatment.
